Victory Baptist Church, known for its spirit-filled Sunday services. Students experienced the power of a Southern Baptist gospel service and stayed to mingle with church members and learn more about their faith traditions after the service. This event is one of many Milwaukee-area AFS students describe as having a profound impact on their study abroad experience.

Christchurch, New Zealand Earthquakes
A former AFS Student recently moved to Christchurch. Here’s part of an email she recently sent us.
“I actually just moved to Christchurch to attend university here, it was our second day of classes, and I was actually in my American Studies lecture in the basement of an 8 storey building when it hit! The whole building shook really violently and everyone tried to hide under the desks, to the best we could! As soon as it stopped shaking we all ran outside, with chunks of tiles and dust falling on the ground around us. As we got outside the first aftershocks hit and the ground rolled like waves. It was honestly one of the scariest moments of my life! The uni sent us all ‘home’ and we headed back to the dorms which were all okay. Thankfully, there were no buildings that collapsed onsite and no one was hurt too much on campus! The dorms were deemed okay and we were allowed to stay onsite, but I chose to drive out to my brothers house, he is about an hour out of the city and its much safer here! We only just feel the after shocks out here! Plus our power and water is all okay! So I will just stay out here until classes resume, and then I will go back to the dorms.
“Here is a really good website to check up on what is happening down here:
www.stuff.co.nz
“I am just really happy to have gotten out okay and that all my family is safe!”

AFS in Shorewood for 60 years? That’s a long time!
Come help us mark the occasion
Sunday, September 26th
2:00 – 4:00 PM
Shorewood High School foyer
Fostering understanding between peoples of the world is a huge and important challenge. Shorewood High School has been an active partner with AFS-USA since 1950. This is an incredibly impressive commitment, of which we should all be very proud.
As a friend of AFS, you understand how crucial it is to show children that the world is open to them, they need not be afraid, but merely seek to understand. Whether you are a family who opened your doors to a child from another part of the world, a family who let your own child experience a year abroad, or an individual who has experienced the thrill of learning something unimaginable – simply by having conversation with a young person very different from oneself, please join us.
We look back with pride, we look forward with hope.
Light refreshments will be served.
RSVP to Sonja Ivanovich

Thinking About Welcoming an AFS Exchange Student
Now’s the time! Sharing daily life with a teenager from another country and culture is a rich and rewarding experience, and it’s a wonderful way to bring more understanding into the world. If you’ve ever thought about welcoming an exchange student into your home and family, now’s the time to learn more. AFS, the leading international high school student exchange program, needs families in our community to host high school students for an academic year or six months. Students arrive in August.
